BILLIE EILISH LIQUID SKY POSTER

This piece helped me learn how to make new textures in Illustrator  and use them to enhance the visuals in my design. The project also helped me develop multiple drafts and versions of the poster before arriving at my final version. This project allowed me to explore my process and pay attention to the progression of my ideas visually.

This poster is used for marketing materials to promote the Billie Eilish Liquid Sky show at Fiske Planetarium in Boulder, CO and was composed during my time as Social Media Specialist. Liquid sky shows at the planetarium give audiences the chance to experience music from their favorite artists while accompanied by large moving graphics and animations projected on to the 8k digital planetarium dome. The target audience and demographic of this piece is primarily college students.

ITERATION 1

Artboard 1.png

Although I loved this idea, I felt it encompassed Billie's earlier aesthetics and for the purpose of attracting a wider audience I thought it was best to look for inspiration from Billie's current works and branding at the time. I felt some of the references were too niche, here is the WIP.

INSPIRATION IMAGES:

These images (right) were used for initial inspiration for the 1st version of the poster, drawing inspiration for the Everything I wanted music video fused together with elements from the ilomilo music video.

The car used in this draft is based of the model of Billie Eilish's real-life car which is also used in the Everything I wanted music video. The ilomilo shark is a lesser known reference and I thought it would have been cool reference to incorporate  for long time fans of the artist.

Artboard 8.png

The piece below was inspired by the song "Happier than Ever" The idea was to emulate the house from the music video but in a simplified form. It was minimalistic, but ultimately I didn't feel like it was very visually engaging for viewers and felt incomplete.

These images were used as inspirtation for this piece. Billies hair inspired the shift from the blue and black of the previous version to the red and black of this one. The images above are captures from Billie's performance of Happier than Ever  from the 64th Grammys Ceremony and Billie's new red and black hairstyle at the time.

ITERATION 3

billie_eillish_notuseable.png

In this iteration of the poster, I used photoshop to mask and extract Billie from the inspo image, traced the image and colored it using the image trace fuction in Illustrator. Although I thought it had a great outcome I used the iteration as more of an experiment as the image was copyrighted.

These images were more recent capture of Billie and also posses the red aesthetic that I wanted in my final product.

FINAL ITERATION

billie_eillish_liquidsky_forprint.png

These last iterations of the poster were the most all-encompassing and I felt that it would reach and be recognizable to the most amount of people. The side-profile view was vectorized manually in Illustrator and replaced with the red hair instead of the green depicted in the image.

I wanted to utilize Billie's hair because it is so recognizable but felt the it was important to include her whole profile to balance the blank space and overall look of the poster.
